5TV, Computer Monitor, Video Game Center
By Chris
This television is the best you can buy for the price ($1169 at Circuit City on sale) - I'll break it down by its possible uses:Television:With an analog television signal, the picture is mediocre - but that's true of most LCDs (and with how bad analog signals are getting, that might be true of all TVs these days). With an HDTV signal, the picture is crisp, clean, and static graphics don't waver like on most LCD televisions in this price range. Fast moving action doesn't blur or pixelate at all.DVD playback:When hooked up with component or S-video cables, DVDs are about as good as you'd get with a regular television. There may be some pixelation on static graphics and default color settings may not be to your liking, but playing with the settings will fix that for standard viewers. Using a DVI cable hook-up, you'll get an amazing picture that almost makes the cost of DVI cables worth it. The default widescreen picture may look pinched between two large black bars, but changing the picture settings will allow you to eliminate the typical widescreen black bars without sacrificing the edges of the picture.Computer monitor:*Note this television was hooked up to a NVIDIA GeForce FX 5600 Ultra graphics card*This is an excellent computer monitor, but ONLY if you use a DVI cable (this will keep you from hooking up a DVD or cable box with a DVI cable). Using an S-video cable to hook this television up to a computer will probably leave you with a massive case of eye strain because text will be blurry and the S-video option doesn't allow you to alter the setting very much. With a DVI hook up, this television can act as an excellent (and huge) computer monitor. With some programs such as video games, you may need to alter the in-game resolution to make it fit with the monitor resolution (tested with World of Warcraft), otherwise the game action will look blurry. Again, changing the setting will fix this problem for most peoples' tastes. You can have your computer running with the television picture-in-picture or side-by-side (or vice versa), allowing you to work and watch television or a DVD (S-video connection only). As for points of criticism, this television only has 1 S-video connection, 2 component video connections, and 1 DVI connection. The S-video connection does not face downward like the other connections do so pressing this unit back against a wall isn't possible if you're planning on using an S-video connection. The remote is serviceable, but the picture-in-picture channel must be changed via the remote by going through the on screen menu. The picture-in-picture cannot be swapped without going through the menu as well. The sound is face-forward only, but with a standard surround hook up you won't feel like the TV is projecting sound straight at you. With any LCD TV, you may find one or two dead pixels (visible on dark backgrounds), so you may want to check the picture before hooking everything up just in case. For the money and the size, this television can't be beat. I compared this TV to a 20" Sharp Aquos LCD and this Samsung actually came out on top in practically every category, including price. If you're looking for a great LCD television that can also be used as a computer monitor, this is the way to go.

4Excellent TV for use with component input
By Kram Niawt
To clarify the title a bit, it's not that there's anything wrong with the TV without component inputs, just that it doesn't take real advantage of the Tv's strengths if you don't at least hook up your DVD player to it. :-)My setup is relatively minimal: it's hooked up with my DVD player and to satellite TV (with antenna broadcast stations). I haven't hooked this up to any external speakers, and much of my TV viewing isn't HD.Anyway, the picture is excellent, especially if you have a progressive scan DVD player and/or an HD receiver (obviously). The blacks aren't the blackest of the blacks, but the TV does have a few preset color and brightness settings, and offers a custom setting to the user. There's a fair amount of customization available to the user for the picture and sound, including fine tuning analog signals. My parents have a rear projection TV that isn't so great with NTSC (analog) signals, but this thing doesn't show the pixellated effect to anywhere near the degree that their TV does. The DNIe algorithm does a good job with boosting color and contrast too, and there's a nifty demo mode that does a split screen of DNIe on one side and no added effect on the other on top of the current signal. DNIe and some of the preset color settings do exaggerate colors a bit, but not to the point of a major color shift. If you're a purist with regard to color, you would want to leave DNIe off, set any presets to "Standard" or "Movie." It has two zoom modes for those rare occasions when you want to clip off the top and bottom of a 4:3 signal. The second zoom seems to strech things vertically I guess to fill the screen from wider cinema formats. (I never use it.) The sidebars when in 4:3 mode are black, but screen burn-in isn't a real issue with an LCD.The sound from the internal speakers is good for what you get in one package, and while I'm generally skeptical of these whiz-bang features like WOW stereo (or DNIe above), it works well with the internal speakers at least. It's probably superfluous if you have a surround or better quality external speakers, but for me, it does somehow make ambient audio sound deeper and more peripheral. For example, sounds that happen offscreen sounds like they coming from way off to the right or left at a proper distance. The design of the TV itself is nice, though some might not like the black border around the picture. Viewing at angles is not an issue at all -- the picture is great at pretty much any angle, and the frame doesn't block out the picture. The case is a lot of plastic painted a good metallic silver, with a heavy base (not too heavy -- the whole thing wieghs about 24 lbs.), and has a good level of fit and finish. It's not to the level of an Apple computer, but it's as good as the Sony and Philips I looked at.Samsing makes a pretty big deal about using it as a PC monitor in tandem, with picture in picture (PIP), and a button in an important spot on the remote.Setup is pretty easy. Cables in the back face down, but it's easy to remove the cover there and get them in place. There are a few extra outputs that are exposed on the back for quick access. Configuring the TV options is easy, and the menu system is clear. It has a quick setup mode when you first turn it on, and it's easy to find that option again later in the menus. Menus are big and easy to read with a semi-transparent background so you can see the effects on the picture behind. The reason it gets 4 stars and not 5 is because of the average remote. It has all the stuff you need on it, obviously, and some nice and accessible options are on it like the picture mode, the picture size, the audio mode, component switching, etc. It has a covered panel that slides down to access some. It isn't really a complete universal remote, and I think Samsung expects users to buy a real one to replace the included one. The finish, the buttons, and the contours of the remote are OK, but not designed to the same level as the TV proper.Did I miss anything? Probably, but overall it's a very good TV. I use mine in my living room, though I'm guessing a lot of people will use it in a den or bedroom because of the size. I sit about 6-8 feet from it and it looks and sounds great.FYI: Be sure to let your DVD player know you're using a widescreen TV, or else it will stretch the picture in widescreen mode and still leave bars at the top and bottom. It took me a few minutes to figure that out.

4Update: I wish I could change my rating
By Coop
I first saw this TV in Circuit City. The picture on it was as good or better than all the other flat-panels on display. I was ready to plop my money down right there when the salesman told me that it couldn't be wall mounted. My heart sank (who would make a flat panel that can't be wall mounted?). I went home and within a minute on the internet I found the wall mount for sale at J&R Music World. So don't let the uninformed folks at Cicuit City burst your bubble. Soon thereafter I found the TV on the internet at a substantial discount to the CC price. It promptly arrived about 3 weeks ago. The wall mount was easy to install, and I ran the wires into the wall behind it. Now my TV rests securely yet stately on the living room wall. On to performace...Not only does the picture meet or beat any other flat-panel I've seen, it even beats my friends top of the line Samsung DLP HDTV. No real problems with fast moving action, and the blacks are black (some lCD's can only produce a dark gray). I currently use an LG Over-The-Air HD tuner, and the HD picture is fantastic using either the component or DVI connection. However, right now OTA HD content is limited to special events (monday night football for example) and primetime television. The regular analog signal is actually a little better picture than the non-HD digital picutre (confused yet?). So I leave it on analog unless true HD content is being broadcast. Now my biggest problem with this tv, and what keeps it from earning 5 stars, is the lack of quality audio when using the DVI source. In order to get audio with the DVI, I had to run regular RCA audio cables from the tuner to the tv, then use a PC stereo adapter (combines the two cables into one input), therefore the audio only plays out of one speaker. The TV has a digital video input, but no digital audio input! Now there are RCA audio inputs on the tv, but they only work when the Component source is selected. So I'm going to have to go back to using Component cables just so I can get sound out of both speakers on the TV.I suspect they will come out with a model that has the newest HDCP(?) input that combines digital audio and video in one cable. If Samsung could just do that one simple thing, then this tv warrants 5 solid stars.UPDATE: TV broke one year and six months after purchase. It is no longer under warranty. I'd change my rating to a 1 star if I could. I expect my electronics to last more than a year and a half. I'll see if someone can fix it...

5Vizio surprised me.
By Musical Snob
I looked for two months at HD tv's. I wanted the best 42 inch I could get for around $550.00. Needles to say, there is a bunch of TV's that fit this criteria. They all look good in the store and all the specs are pretty much the same. Lo and behold, I saw this Vizio for 480.00 at Amazon. Crossed my fingers and took a chance. This Vizio is Great. Easy to set up, just the right amount of connections in the rear, and what a great picture. In my small dark living room, TV programs VIA antenna is super and my DVD's never looked so good, not to mention my Blu-Ray's. Fantastic. Some people might not be satisfied with only 2 HDMI plugs, but I run everything thru an AV receiver. So two HDMI is more than enough for me. I don't play video games so the 60Hz refresh rate is fine for me. I watch a lot of sports, but I have not noticed any shadows or trailer effects. I have had this set for more than a month and I have not had any problems. Don't be turned off by the low price. Sometimes buying HD tv's can be a crap shoot, but from my experience, you won't go wrong with this Vizio.

5Wouldnt buy any other brand
By gingergrl88
I bought this exact tv from Walmart. Never had any issues with it at all. Great picture, the sound was great for us for internal speakers, obviously if you want surround sound or theater quality get surround sound speakers. Lasted us 2 years and probably would have lasted much longer, but our son decided to swing one of my husbands golf clubs in our living room...oops! Since the prices for Vizio tvs have drastically reduced since our original purchase we can get a much larger size for the same price we originally paid! I am now shopping for the same exact tv for our bedroom, and a larger Vizio for our living room. Great brand in our opinions!

5Solid and reliable
By Skullywag
This makes my 3rd Visio purchased, and I couldn't be more pleased.Excellent picture, great sound. Good value. Only $19 a year to operate!(exceeds energy star ratings)Being a semi-budget model, it doesn't have some of the features more expensive models do (PIP most notably), but I knew this going in.I had the opurtunity to buy a cheaper tv during the pre-Black Friday and Black Friday sales, but most of CHEAP models offered this year are the no-name brands with a noticably poorer picture.I decided purposefully to buy a LCD over a LED...LED's are notorious for tinny or just plain bad sound due to the thin panels not having enough room for decent speakers. The poor sound of LED's CAN be overcome by hooking up a sound bar or set of 2.1 pc speakers...but I chose not to go the "addon to make it right" route for this one. It will be for the bedroom, and sound quality is quite good on it's own.

Product Description

SXRD¿ Chips --- SXRD technology is the latest display technology developed by the legendary television engineers at Sony to meet and exceed the demands of a High Definition image at its full 1080 line resolution. Digitally transmitted High Definition signals can contain over 2 million individual detail points that need to be displayed accurately and rapidly. SXRD displays those 2 million detail points per SXRD panel accurately since the 3 SXRD chips actually contain enough pixels to fully display a 1080 line picture without interlacing it. SXRD has the speed to create a smooth, film like image. The SXRD chips have a blistering response time (less than 5ms total rise and fall time), which exceeds the demands of even the most rapidly moving High Definition images. And SXRD creates highly accurate, natural colors because the 3-chip design displays all the colors, all the time.

4Excellent Television
By Mr. Grant
I bought this TV back at the end of May, and I have thoroughly enjoyed having it. Picture wise, I think it outclasses any RPTV on the market right now. Standard Def is acceptable, while HD is unbelievable. I also hook up my PC through the HDMI input and that looks amazing as well. The VGA PC hookup is worthless and Im not sure why Sony wasted there time putting it there if you arent going to allow 1920 X 1080 resolution. The only real drawback for me is that there are only 2 HDMI inputs. Im already using both so if I purchase a Blu Ray, that means the cable box will be going to component. Unfortunately component doesnt accept 1080P on this tv. However the A2000 and A2020 are really last years technology so for the price its still a great deal. So to summarize, if this TV had 3 HDMIs or component accepted 1080P it would be great. But I have to knock it a star because of those factors.

4Great Picture Great Versatility Average Sound
By Al
I replaced an older Sony rear projector to get HD. Everything is similar, and up to Sony standards. The picture is great, and the set is capable of 8 inputs. I can't talk about tuner performance, because I'm running directly from a DirecTv HD receiver via HDMI. The sound is not very good, however. If you are serious about listening quality, you should hook this set up to an audio system. Originally, I wanted a flat screen, but this is soooo much less expensive. If you can stand a set that is about 17" deep, this is a great choice - and the price keeps coming down - and Amazon ships for free!

4not an lcd picture but very good HDTV
By oldschool;53
before buying this sony i did a lot of comparing, from going into stores to reading every consumer report i could find, having a samsung 40 L.C.D. and not wanting to spend 3,500 to 4,000 for a bigger t.v . i finally got the sony, you will not get the same picture as a l.c.d. thats what i was hung up on ,, however you do get a very good picture. i do a lot of gaming also so the response time was also a factor,, l.c.d. paint the picture something like 8 millisec.. fast but not as fast as the sony does ,something like 2millisec..H.D.channels are great standard ok but they are just ok on my L.C.D. also.. bulb replacement every 2 years more or less should not be a problem easy to do for about 249.00 max.. i looked at all the brands of projection hdtv..i did not want to chance seeing the rainbow effect that DLP can produce, and did not like the picture with the new samsung led light source too dark too new ..all in all for the money a very solid hdtv..

4Great TV for the price
By J. Fackrell
First of all, you won't find a much better TV for the price that has the features this TV has. Out of the box it looked great. I had previously owned a 62" Toshiba DLP and a 60" Sony LCD TV, both of which I returned because I was not satisfied. Despite what others may say, this TV does better than the two TV's I just listed in relation to how regular TV looks. At 65" it does a great job of taking standard television and making it look good. The Toshiba did an okay job, which I attribute to the DLP chip and the Sony LCD was just plain horrible. Compared to the other two, this TV also is superior when it comes to the PIP and video functions. The Sony didn't even come with PIP and the Toshiba would frame the pictures with black bars which made the pictures smaller. This TV uses all of the available space for both pictures and you have options to reformat each picture so that one is larger than the other. Switching between pictures is a breeze. Now to the reason I only gave it four stars... Out of the box the fan seemed to buzz a little more than the other two TV's I owned. I wouldn't say it's loud, but the buzz can certainly be heard when the volume is low. I looked all over the internet to see if anyone else had experienced the same problem, but coulnd't find any reviews that mention this. It may just be an issue with this particular TV. But then again, I am a picky person and find flaws in many things that some would think are acceptable.Another problem is also not significant, but it is worth mentioning. I found that if you mute the TV, then turn it off while muted and turn it back on later, the TV will still be muted even though the volume level may be turned up. The first time this happened, I thought it was strange that it stayed muted when I turned it back on. I then tried to turn the volume up and no sound came out. The volume level would increase but you couldn't hear anything. I tried changing the channel, changing the input, checked the cables, and even turned it off and back on but still no sound. I then hit the mute button and finally the sound came back on. This is definately a glitch that some may never notice, but I hope it saves some the frustration I experienced. It does not do the same thing if you hit mute, then try to turn the volume up. It only happens if you mute, turn your TV off and back on, then try to turn the volume up. You must press mute to get the volume back.Aside from the two pretty insignificant issues, it's a great TV. My brother also just bought the 62" Samsung DLP, which is a great TV as well. After owning and viewing these other brands, I definately think Mitsubishi and Samsung are the best by far. Stay away from Sony and Toshiba. The only reason I took the Mitsubishi over the Samsung was because it was 3" in larger.12/13/06:I have had this TV now for about 6 months and thought I would provide an update... The "glitches" I mentioned above are really not glitches after all. Regarding the mute issue, that is actually listed as a function in the owners manual. I haven't had any trouble with it since. As for the fan, yes it seems a little loud when you first get it, but surprisingly it gets quieter the more you use it. There must be a burn in period with the fan. Overall, I have had no problems. I have looked at other brands to see if I should have bought something else, but nothing seems to compare. If you use PIP a lot like I do, this has the best format compared to other TV's. This will also outperform any LCD project TV when it comes to standard definition TV due to the DLP and 6 segment color wheel (most other brands only have a 5 segment color wheel). You can't go wrong with this TV!!!

5beautiful HDTV
By Jeffrey Austin
paid 3k and feel its worth the price. have only had for 2 weeks, but the 720p and 1080i signal I receive at times via outdoor antenna looks absolutely awesome. no flaws to mention. it has a built in formating function that allows you to fit the picture you receive to the screen size. very adjustable with the settings(kelvin, 6 colors, etc...)also has numerous connections making install a snap(weighs 100lbs)very happy with this set for hdtvcouple downsides with analog signal...since it is a big screen size, analog signals can look very fuzzy close up(less than 10 feet)when viewing. This is a major drawback for me cause most all channels arent hd yet. my 32" sony looks better when viewing analog.but for future buyers, this set has a beautiful picture at 720p and 1080i. just need to have access to a hdtv signal.UPDATE... recently hooked up a ps3 via hdmi and watched talladega nights in 1080p. what an amazing experience. I really love 1080p. the picture quality was just fantastic. in addition the video games in 720p look awesome. after several months, I am really pleased with this tv and dont have any regrets.

5Awsome picture
By G-Money
Great Price fast delivery Amazon is the best thing since low carb bread and This TV rocks. ordered it and wallahh it was at my door in 3 days. At first I thought the screen was a tad to big but guess what ITS NOT. The HD looks amazing. I looked for about 3 months for a DLP TV set. It came down to this one or the 61 inch Samsung. I am so Glad I got this one.I Think the only down side is the Fan noise at low sound level. Other than that You get used to it I guess.People say that you need to get insurance for the Bulb. But guess what A monkey could replace the 75 dollar bulb. So dont waste your hard earned money at Best Buy or Sears or Circuit City with that stupid sales pitch that you need to get the extended bulb warranty. All it takes is a Screw driver to remove the screw and the new bulb housing at the back slides out, slide the new one in and badda bing your back in business.

1Don't order this TV!
By Green Garden
This TV has a UK plug and uses 220V. This is not listed in the product description so beware! It can't be used in the U.S. Also, it took 6 phone calls to J & R electronics to finally arrange for the return of the TV.

5just started with it
By rosie-corie
And it seems great. OK, the analogue input may not be brilliant, but I don't think its worse that what I got on the older TVs we had. And the picture with the DVD with digital input is fabulous. Sound is fine also; the controls and the menus are intuitive and easy.As long as it holds up, I'm going to be very glad I got this one.Two small complaints: the manual left out something about hooking up the dvd that I found on the samsung website - you may need to change the player's mode of output if you are starting with component cables. AND it took me quite a while to find out how to use the codes for other devices. OK, you input them, but how?? And what was said doesn't seem to work. But given the quality of the set, I really don't count these as worth any minus points. If you get stuck at some point, try the samsung website. Go to this model and look over at the right hand side of the screen and you'll see something like "TV help". Tons of standard questions, manuals, etc.

5Samsung 26" HDTV Is Great!
By Creeksidehiker
After much research and many trips to the big box stores, I bought the Samsung 26" HDTV from Amazon for use in a bedroom with viewing distance of 12 feet. Amazon's free shipping offer and no sales tax resulted in 25% lower cost than any walk-in store. Extended warranties are not recommended by Consumer Reports, etc, because these HDTVs have outstanding reliability, so that made me more comfortable with a no-warranty internet order. Amazon stated 5-10 business days shipping, but after just 2 days, the UPS guys were at my doorstep handing me the box. I attached the base and hooked up the set in about 30 minutes. It worked perfectly on my 90-channel non-HD cable service. A month later the cable company installed our HD box ($9/month rental) and the 20 HD channels are fantastic. The superbowl game was incredibly sharp. At first, channel switching was slightly slower than I'm used to, but with the HD box it is back to normal (fast). I chose Samsung for its brilliant picture quality. Once that was decided, my quandry was picture size. I started at 20", then 23", then settled on 26". Although the viewing is ok for a small room, 32" would have been even better, but it would have dwarfed our room. If you are undecided, go larger. The 16:9 HD format requires a much larger nominal size than the old 4:3 standard def. I am very pleased with this purchase and highly recommend it.

55 Stars for Samsung "Surpassing The Rest"
By Chris E
First up, this TV is gorgeous! The piano-black finish really enhances the picture and brings out the deep blacks in the high-contrast images. The picture can't be beat (and I did a ton of comparison shopping -- in-store & online). The TV is super-slim compared to the competitors - its awesome to look at even when it's "off". Call me shallow, but I was concerned as to how the TV would look in my room & truth of the matter is that I couldn't be more pleased. I feel like I bought a piece of art!Picture-detail and colors are amazing! Vibrant, crystal-clear images -- high-tech/theater quality. The menu is great too; its really user-friendly and allows a ton of options so that you can customize picture/sound settings to your meet your preferences. It's simple to set-up, so no need to hire a pro.My only concern was the speakers; and I'm sad to say, they leave alot to be desired. I had hoped the 2 "hidden" 5 watt speakers would be sufficient for my small room, but they proved to be inferior. I hear a tinny quality and cannot discern any deapths between the tonal output. I was so unhappy with the audio that I upgraded by purchasing samsung's mid-priced home theater-in-a-box (Q45). After doing so, I have been very pleased & I'm really happy with that decision. Also, make sure to realize that if the speakers were not internal and tucked into the bottom of the set, it would not look as sleek and stunning as it does. The benefits of the 51D's sleek design outweighs all of these considerations! The "glare" factor you may have read about in other reviews, has NOT proved to be an issue for me. Granted, the exterior looks 10x better with the lights turned "off", but even when they are on, I have not found this to be at all distracting (and I'm really picky about such details, before buying this set I was worried about the possibility of glare since I do alot of watching with my lights "on". Just make sure you dust the set at least 1-2x/month -- not anything too drastic (make sure you buy the lcd cleaner at your local electronics store-- no windex, pledge, or water!)I can't imagine owning a different set. I'm so happy with this purchase that I would recommend this set to everyone I know. I don't think as many people would have as much as an issue with the speakers as I did. My ears are super-sensitive and detect more than the average listener, so don't necessarily weigh my audio criteria against yours -- its a matter of priority (the rest of my family thinks they were great!) My room is only 10' x 12' but if I had a larger room I would not hesitate to go with the 32" model.
