5Excellent Monitor/HDTV combo
By Normal Norman
I wanted a monitor with HDTV turner for occasional TV viewing. I narrowed my choice to the Samsung T24A350 and FX2490HD. I think both are very similar in term of specs. I like the FX2490HD's stand, but the T24A350 is newer and has black color which I prefer. So I went for the T24A350. The reason I chose 24" screen is that max resolution for TV is 1080p. If I get a bigger one, the pixel density decreases and I think it would not look sharp when using in monitor mode.1. As an HDTV, it is amazing. It automatically scans for cable/antenna channels and removed scrambled ones. Picture is sharp, color is vivid on HD channel (720p or 1080i). I don't usually watch TV much but I have to admit I will spend more time because of the improvement in HD quality. I mainly use this as an external monitor for my Macbook Pro. So I take advantage of the Picture-in-Picture (PIP) feature to have a small TV window overlaid on the bottom right corner. I can select the size and position of this TV window. However, Samsung limits the choice to 2 sizes and 4 positions (at four corner). You can select the sound source when in PIP mode, i.e., you can output the sound from the HDMI source (it is my Macbook Pro in my case) or from the TV channel. To do this, in the PIP menu, go to Sound Select, choose Sub to get the sound from the TV turner, choose Main to get the sound from whatever source is main (from HDMI in my case). Oh, FYI, I bought a $7 Mini Displayport to HDMI adapter for my Macbook Pro (Mid 2011). I works wonderful both picture and sound.2. As a monitor, it is very good. For this 24" size, I would want a higher resolution than 1080p but the picture looks very sharp on this monitor. As mentioned by many reviewers, you have to edit the HDMI connection's name to get better picture. To do this, first connect your computer to a HDMI port, press Source on the remote --> select HDMI --> press Tools on the remote --> Edit Name --> Select PC. For me, I also changed the Color Tone to Warm2 to get the tone I like.I had this experience that I want to share in case someone gets the same issue. I always connect my laptop to the HDMI1 port (naturally) and get pleasant result. One day, I decided to connect my desktop to the HDMI2 port just out of curiosity. I was mad when the picture appeared worse than the one from HDMI1. I did change the source name to PC, I tried to change the settings on my desktop and tried to connect my laptop to this HDMI2 port. All got the same crap picture quality. I was about to return this monitor/TV (and leave bad review, hmm). But then I discovered that the picture settings for HDMI1 and HDMI2 are independent. In my case, the Sharpness for HDMI2 was 100 (max) while he HDMI1's was 50. When the sharpness is this high, no doubt the picture looks grainy. It's just like you increase a photo's sharpness in Photoshop. I decreased the Sharpness and change some other settings to be the same as HDMI1 and the result was excellent. Now I got both HDMI ports working as desired. I wish Samsung presets the right settings for this monitor so that people who buy it don't need to make sophisticated changes just to make it work. The package comes with:1. Monitor2. Stand3. Power cord4. Remote control5. Two AAA batteries for the remote6. VGA cable7. 2.5mm & 3.5mm male to RCA audio cable (I don't use this)8. A clip to organize cables9. Assembly instruction bookletsNo paper-based manual. The e-manual is built in the monitor and can be accessed by pressing the E-MANUAL button on the remote. No HDMI cable, so you may want to order some before this monitor arrives. I bought 99-cent ones and very happy.I recommend this monitor/HDTV combo.

3Excellent HDTV, but don't expect an excellent monitor.
By Kevin
I gave this monitor/HDTV combination a go because it seemed to have everything I wanted. In addition to having a screen resolution suitable for computer use (1680x1050), it also had a good array of A/V hookups (2x HDMI, component, RCA, digital audio), good speakers, an over-the-air TV tuner, and a (near-perfect) TV remote. It seemed to be the perfect monitor for a mixed use environment, like a kitchen or a bedroom. Neat! However, I was severely disappointed by this panel because I hadn't done my homework. It turns out that Samsung uses a Twisted Nematic (TN) display technology for almost all of its consumer displays (computer monitors included!), and this unit was no exception. The trade-off with TN panels is that color and contrast shift significantly in the vertical direction, even if you keep your head still. For instance, if you are viewing a photograph, the image will be darker when positioned near the top of the monitor, and lighter when positioned near the bottom of the monitor. It's a drastic enough change that it just becomes more and more irritating over time. I expect more color and contrast consistency out of a 24" display that costs $300+.Samsung tries to compensate for the color/contrast shift with a menu option called "MagicAngle", but that doesn't cure the problem. It just makes the monitor look less washed-out when viewed from a standing or seated position. The fact is, colors and contrast will vary at different points on the screen no matter what angle you adjust the monitor to.TN isn't necessarily a bad technology -- in fact, it's a pretty good choice for an HDTV. The TV was quick enough to keep up with fast-moving scenes and look quite good from several feet away. Colors looked pretty good from a distance as well. If you just plan to use this as an HDTV, I don't think you'd be disappointed at all. I loved every single HDTV function this had. Samsung makes great TVs, full stop. But this also claims to be a decent monitor. So I returned it and replaced it with an IPS monitor. IPS panels do not suffer from the color and contrast shifting problems TN displays have (try comparing them next time you visit an electronics store). PVA monitors are also quite good.If you're interested, Dell (under the UltraSharp brand), ViewSonic and LG all sell excellent monitors with IPS panels (there are other manufacturers too, just search for "IPS monitor" or "PVA monitor" in the Electronics department and be sure to check the product description). I think Samsung has some PVA monitors, but they're not as up-front about the display technology in their spec sheets. In summary, there's a lesson to be learned here. When judging a panel's image quality, ignore claims from the manufacturer and reviewers about "vibrant color" and "deep blacks" without understanding the underlying panel technology first. Subjective attributes don't make up for the fact that, when used as a computer monitor, TN-based panels are a poor substitute for IPS, PVA, and other higher-end display technologies. Most people spend hours in front of a computer monitor every day. It's worth a little extra money to make sure what you're looking at looks good to *you*.

5Great Product.

Using this with MacBook Pro (via mini display port to HDMI) and Hdtv antenna.Pros:-looks great-easy assembly-has picture-in-picture (PC on big screen w/tv in the smaller screen.)-Can switch from PC to Tv with one button.-sound is decent for a small bedroom. No need for external speakers.-E-manual for quick reference.Con:-Picture need to be adjusted for TV and PC.(When connected to PC via HDMI need to rename HDMI source to PC. Source > HDMI 1 > Press Tool button.)-Not as thin as the new LED TVs, but is still doesn't take up a lot of space.Overall, I'm happy to have bought this when it was on sale.
