Quiet Listening Not Possible
By RAYMOND M. SUBASIC
Pros: cheap, decent picture qualityCons: terrible sound quality, no sound at all below volume level 4, 90 day warranty on a new unitBottom Line: Not recommended - especially if you're looking for quiet listeningI recently picked up a Coby LEDTV3246 at another retailer (not Amazon). The picture quality is decent, but the sound quality is not good. The speakers sounds "tinny/boxxy" -- almost as bad as an old transistor radio -- like coming out of a 1/4" speaker from a bad laptop. Worse, if you're looking for "quiet listening," like in a bedroom, the sound is too loud at when set at volume level 4 but goes totally silent at volume setting 3 or below. I tried numerous HDMI cables and hooked it up to 3 different sources (cable box and two different xbox 360's), but never got any sound output when the volume was set to 3 or below. This applies only to HDMI inputs. I did not try the other inputs for this issue. So, I emailed and called Coby support and, after some back and forth, one of their phone support staff tells me that "That's just the way the HDMI design is on those units [the LEDTV models]. I'm not sure why they did it that way." I asked him if I returned this unit and picked up an exact replacement, would it exhibit the same problem. He said that it would be the same problem with an exact replacement and that all Coby LED HDTV models would have the same issue.
