5Toshiba is back in the game with this one
By Heman K.
I just bought this TV three days ago after two weeks of reading reviews on tv's and shopping and was actually getting tired of reading and looking I think we can sometimes get more confused by reading too many reviews. I had my choice down to two a Sharp 60" and the Samsung smart tv 60" 7000 series. Will I used to buy Toshiba tube tv's and video players and liked them and thought their flat screens just was not there, BUT after looking at Sears, Best Buy, and others and like I said had it down to two I went into one last store here I have not been in awhile and Bamb!! I was shown this new Toshiba cinema series which came in 55 and 65" and home we went with the 55". Wish I would have got the 65 now but all I can say after a few days is I think Toshiba is back in the game with this one, I have not found anything I do not like about this tv yet, I could not turn it off the first night I was up till 4am. The 3D looks good, got the Internet up and watched a Netflix movie and just love this set so far and was on sale for $1649 with four sets of 3D glasses and player for $100 more pkg. The Samsung was $2399 and the sharp was not 3D. Only thing I'm having trouble with is getting my surround sound hooked back up but It's been along time since I moved it to a new tv so may have to call the pros in but going to work on it some more.

4Toshiba 55UL610 first impressions
By K.D. COCHRAN
I was able to source one of these used as a display unit from a local retailer...(greatly discounted price)Controls/Remote: Good remote..well laid out and seems like all of the buttons for functions you would normally need are available to tweak.Easy to use the remote for all of the picture/sound functions..nothing to complain about here..on screen menu is decent and easily read..TV Appearance: Very slim and attractive...probably not even 5/8" thick overall..stand seems firm enough and also rotates about 60 degress left and right...it was so light I was able to pick up the entire TV and stand up and set down on a TV stand with minimal effort..Performance: I've only used the Spears and Munsil disc for set up so far (no $200 calibration funds available yet!) and was able to get black levels and contrast set to a good benchmark degree..I did not work on any of the color gamut..I've only spent about 30 mins so far so I'm sure I can work on it some more to tweak it out even better down the road. Black level looks very good, almost plasma like..lots of pop from the colors and good detail in the dark areas...I could probably get even more detail out of it, but I may need to lose a bit of the black level for some more detail..The gamma control is very useable...you can adjust it to find the happy medium for the varied resolutions/programing/picture quality variation from your signal provider..(I have DirecTV and always get excellent quality)..I also hooked up my old beat up missing elements outside antenna and this TV was able to pull in 18 OTA HD/SD channels..the HD channels look fantastic..the SD are very good and watchable..amazing what uncompressed HD looks like...This TV is touted as having local dimming, but I'm not sure it has the true local dimming I understand it to be..I have the Toshiba SV670U which is LED with true local dimming and I believe this to be an Edge lit with some type of diffusion to closely approximate true local dimming..I have not seen any banding or hot spots so whatever they've used here is pretty darn good. I do believe a full calibration will help this TV become an absolute gem...I did back off the color temperature a bit as with the excellent blacks this unit gets it seemed the colors were a bit too vivid for my taste. The refresh rate is 480hz and motion interpolation used is very good..no tracers, tearing or haloing in real world program content that I've seen...I also use a Sony PS3 for gaming/Blu ray and have not been disappointed in that area either..Blu-ray is absolutely beautiful on this TV.I have not used anything other than the Netflix widget yet and the built in wireless unit has no issues streaming from my router..picture is excellent no stuttering (I have Comcast 15mbps connection with Asus N56U router)..only minor issue there is that it seems to take a minute or so before programming starts after hitting play on your selection.I'd like to note that once you get past about 90-120 degrees off center, that the picture does noticeably fade, but I've seen that on other ultra thin LED models from the other guys (Samsung/Sony) as well.Overall this TV is fantastic..with a pro calibration I'll get someday, I'm sure it'll be even better. Out of the box I can't see how anyone would be less than thrilled with this TV.I did not test out the 3D capabilities of this TV but it did come with 2 pair of 3D glasses that also had small usb cables that you can use to charge them up right from the USB ports on the back.Just a note..I don't believe may of these were actually made/shipped due to the timing of the Tsunami in Japan...I believe they just moved on to the next model year..so..that said I think these may be rare and you might want to grab one if you can get a good price on it..

4Good TV but not great
By Edward
First let me say that I have been annoyed for years with the overly critical reviews on TVs in general. I've spent over a year afraid to purchase a TV in the past simply due to details that I learn aren't even noticeable. My last TV was the Toshiba 55sv670u and I loved every aspect of it. The picture blew me away. It had bad reviews that scared me, still bought it and thought those people were crazy 5 minutes after plugging it in! It died after 2 years and decided to replace it with another "better" TV. My choice after a ton of research was the Toshiba 55ul610u. I have to say that I am somewhat disappointed when comparing it to the quality of my older TV. It's not a terrible TV, just a little let down since it is newer technology from what I am used to. I just expected a total "wow" once it was set up.The picture is a bit grainy. To most will probably go unnoticed. I do need to stress that it is very mild. You'll probably only notice it because I mentioned it and you're looking for it! I notice it more in the background rather than the focal point of what's going on. The "Clearscan 480hz" is not as smooth as my older "Clearscan 240hz". Again, not bad but if you have lots going on in the screen you'll catch a mild blur... for example, an explosion in the upper left of the screen with a man running in the lower right will yield a very slight blur to everything else. It's nothing major but I am comparing my experience to what I was used to with an older TV. Most people aren't going to be looking at the background while there's an explosion and someone running! It's like this television focuses on the main activity and quality of the background stuff suffers a tad bit... I know that's probably not possible in fact, but that's what it looks like. Everything looks like you're watching a soap opera. If you don't know what I mean, with any TV turn on a regular program then switch channels to a soap opera. It could even be that the screen is so darn accurate that my eye is catching every detail that couldn't be seen in a lesser TV.The sound is less than acceptable. Understand most flat screens are barely 2 or 3 inches thick. That's not much space for a speaker to create quality sound... you'll find lesser sound quality with any flat screen TV and it's really annoying to read all the reviews from people that are obviously expecting home theater sound from 2 tiny speakers. If you're anything like me, I have the home theater fired up any time I am watching a movie. If I'm serious enough to buy a 55" TV, I'm serious enough to have a sound system for the full experience. I just think this TV sounds like 2 speakers in a plastic box when watching regular television. The last Toshiba didn't sound cheap... again, wasn't blow you away sound but it didn't have me constantly checking the sound settings to see if there was anything I could do to improve it. I still can't find the "advanced eq settings" it's advertised to have. The 3D is just cool. It does take your eyes a minute or two to adjust to the glasses. The first 30 seconds, I hated it then my eyes adjusted a little and was amazed. It's not like other TV's that look like a bunch of layers. If there's a rock sitting there, it looks like a rock that you could reach out and pick up. Other TV's I've seen don't appear to have the ability to round things off and give it a "real" look. Now the 2D to 3D conversion is a bit of a waste. It's such a minimal effect that you just feel stupid sitting there with the glasses on. I spent a while questioning whether or not there was any difference even with the depth setting at maximum.I will say it's still a good TV. The blacks are black, the whites are white and there's no fading from the edges to the center. It's all there but compared to my last Toshiba, it just doesn't blow me away like the last one did.The pros are a great 3D experience. That aspect of the TV was really surprising in a good way. The TV looks really nice on the wall. You have true blacks and true whites. There's no blotches or gray areas like other TV's. The edge's are just as accurate as the center when looking at color. Then lets face it, this is a HUGE 3D TV for less than $2000. Others that I looked at in stores lacked much more of the important stuff for a lot more money. The cons are a slightly less than "blow me away". I'm sure I am being overly critical, because I am used to a different TV by the same maker that appeared superior to me. I'll get used to the "soap opera" look but wasn't expecting that to be my initial reaction when setting up the TV. The sound is kind of a joke. Make sure you have some sort of external sound equipment. Don't waste your time with the 2D to 3D conversion... to me it's more of an advertising feature rather than a practical one.Overall, most people will never even see the imperfections I am pointing out (other than the sound quality). You're probably not going to find a better TV for the money. I chose this one over many that were priced $500-$1000 more. This could very well be a TV with such a perfect picture that you see imperfections from movies and broadcast that the producers never expected you to see... meaning it's flaws in the movie rather than the TV's quality. I'm giving it 4 stars simply because I really can't tell if the "soap opera" look is a flaw or the result of an overly accurate picture... and the sound quality is pretty poor.
