Sony KP-46WT520 46-Inch Hi-Scan 1080i HD-Ready Projection TV

Product Description

Sony's 46-inch Hi-Scan 1080i KP-46WT520 is equipped to turn your living room or board room into a movie theater. The set uses Sony's HD Microfocus CRT and lens system, featuring smaller phosphor particles, thinner phosphor layers, and other improvements that give the set a beam spot 28-percent smaller than Sony's standard CRTs. And that means sharper focus, higher contrast, and brighter images. The screen features a wide, 16:9 aspect ratio that matches the dimension of most movies and HDTV broadcasts, and the KP-46WT520 is compatible with standard-definition 480i, enhanced-definition 480p, and high-definition 720p and 1080i sources.

5The BEST value for the money!
By Method2Madness "Alex"
Right off the bat I can, with a straight face and calm hands, say this is THE best television I have EVER owned! And probably one of the best I have ever seen! I have been in the A/V industry for a while and pretty much consider myself an A/V guru. I have been through and previewed countless televisions as I am constantly upgrading and none compare to this one. When I was shopping for an HD widescreen, as most do, I factored in price, features and most of all quality. I did NOT want to spend thousands of dollars on something that would not be worth the initial investment. That being said, I looked into the LCD and CRT rear projection market, with a strong lean towards CRT projection. Now, I expected there to be a signifigant difference in picture between the CRT projectors and the LCD/DLP/LCOS units. I was wrong. Dead wrong. While some of the higher dollar sets apppeared to be a LITTLE sharper, the price to performance ratio was NOT justifiable and this set even bested a couple DLP units! Also the LCD units are basically charging more for a VERY similar picture! The only REAL benefit of the "other" formats is....weight! Honestly!Bottom line: Super clear picture(ESPECIALLY with an HD source), great on features and the price is perfect. There is NO reason to spend more on a technology that is still getting the kinks out.

5Excellent Home Cinema
By Lou Goodman
If you really love the theatrical eperience and don't want to invest that much money on those Plasma systems, this is an excellent option. Sony gives their best in a High Definition Wide Screen Wega Projection TV. You just have to plug in your home theater and you need nothing more. It is full of very easy to use functions and the image looks really sharp, if you can get a High Definition DVD you will be amazed, the image looks awsome. In addition of this TV, I recommend you to buy the matching SONY TV stand, the model number is SU-46WT11, this would really complete your purchase!

5Love this TV...
By ThisThatNEverything
This Wide Screen Projection TV is really awesome & has many special features to it & you don't have to be a genius to figure it out. Some of the features that I really like:There is a choice of 4 different viewing modes, which is a really nice. There is a Side By Side viewing option that allows you to watch 2 different shows at a time & it's very easy to switch back & fourth between the 2 & you can adjust the size to make 1 large & the other small if you want.I love the Favorite Channels button that you can program your favorite channels & when you are watching a show you press favorites & a little box will pop up & you can switch through stations on that little box to see if something else is on & if so you just select it. Basically you are able to see what else is on without interrupting your current show. The Freeze button is neat because if something is on the screen such as a phone number that you want to write down or something you can press freeze & another screen will pop up with that frozen screen & your show will continue on in the other box.The picture is really great on this TV as well as the sound so I recommend this TV to anybody.

5Awesome TV
By N. Wheeler
I love this TV. It has great black levels without losing details. Seriously the blacks get as dark as the bezel in a darkened room. Great color accuracy. Handles motion like a champ even converting 2D to 3D. Menus are very responsive and even the widgets are snappy. Samsung Apps/Netflix works great too. I am really having fun with the 2D to 3D conversion watching sports and playing video games. I watched Avatar the other night, and even though it wasn't released on 3D Blu ray, the built in converter made it look great. I was nervous about Burn In/ Image Retention, but so far watching 2.39:1 movies hasn't caused any issues that don't take care of themselves switching video sources. I need to say that there is a buzz sound, but its pretty quiet. Can't hear it at all with any audible tv volume. My only major beef with this set is the Audio Return Channel and Optical Out only send 2 channel (stereo) audio unless its source is broadcast. So, my PS3 and cable box will only play dolby directly through my receiver - which in my opinion makes ARC pointless. I hope they change that in an upcoming firmware patch. This TV replaced a UN55B8000 because I was unhappy with its blacks losing details, motion blur, flashlight effect, and sluggish menus and widgets. I experience none of these problems with this new set. I couldn't be happier.

4Worthwhile TV.
By Ishmon
I bought this exact model the PN50C8000. One might get the impression that it is silver. I'd call it a dark grey brushed metal look. Which is fine IMO.One thing that is not often publicized for some reason is the fact that plasma's are not even close to as bright as newer LCD models. This worried me a little. But when I got it; it took some tweaking but I was able to get exactly the color/brightness I wanted for normal viewing and 3d viewing. All 3d glasses are tinted so it's good to have a very bright setting for when you view 3d.Electronics review websites always talk about how plasmas can do extreme blacks. I set it to where the blacks are on the darkest setting. Honestly I was surprised that the blacks are not all that dark (note this is my first plasma I'm not comparing it with other plasmas). The 8000 series LED LCD Samsungs seem about the same when it comes to blacks, of course I have not seen both inside my living room environment so I can't make a perfect comparison. I don't actually care; either tv would be dark enough for me. I just thought I'd point this fact out.The primary reason I bought a plasma over a 8000 series LCD has nothing to do with price or darkness levels, it was for superior 3d viewing. 1.) Less eye strain. I have read on more than one electronics site and electronics magazines that the 600hz viewing of plasmas (and the way the image is drawn on the screen) has been proven to provide less eye strain for 3d viewing. 2.) Viewing angle is always better for plasma over LCD. (This is important for 3d because loss of lighting and clarity is a big deal when you are already limited by the glasses.) 3.) Clearly there is a issue with mixing LCD tech with 3d since if you tilt your head the image splits apart. (This DOES NOT happen with the plasma) and 4. All the reviews I've read say plasma's have tested better for 3d viewing. My complaints are minimal but I think they justify giving 4 stars instead of 5. One is that the TV decides to turn off 3d mode on it's own if you for example exit a Playstation 3 game or change to another input. I understand their reason for doing this but I prefer to just have manual control of it on my own. Also I couldn't get the red and white audio out ports to work, even when I selected to switch to alternate sound output. I suspect it was just something I was doing wrong but it shouldn't be something that requires much effort. I gave up on that because I also had the choice of optical or using the headphones port for my audio so it wasn't a big deal. Another minor complaint I have is the stand is particularly heavy. Obviously it's good to have a sturdy stand but they could have made it strong and much lighter weight and I don't think it would have made for any greater risk of the TV tipping over or something..On a side note; when manufactures say that you should sit closer for optimal 3d viewing than normal viewing they mean it. I'm glad I didn't get any smaller than 50 inches. For optimal 3d immersion I found I like sitting just 5 feet from the screen. For normal viewing I sit at about 8-10 feet from the screen.

5Pleased after lots of research
By Erichb101
I have been researching 3d plasmas for about 3 months. This has to be the best picture quality I have ever seen. I was debating between 3 3d plasmas. Panasonic v25, samsung pn50c7000 or 8000. Even the 7000 got an excellent rating on cnet. what kept it from getting a perfect rating is featured on the 8000. I consider myself a serious videophile and this one does not disapoint. The main diffrence between to 7000 and 8000 is fine tuing of color. and motion judder canceller. This tv has a 2,000,000 to 1 higher contrast ratio. For the price compared to the panasonic it is far better. More apps, and on par picture quality. I have this TV calibrated providing a incredible picture. these settings are below. Do not hesitate to buy this TV. Here is also a review that should help with choices. 5Beautiful picture
By Mike Hike
Bought this TV for a good price and am very impressed with the picture quality. The specs are not that great; however, the picture is better than TVs costing more with better specs. About the sound, it is about as good as anything else that is 1.4 inches thick. I have not found a slim TV that has great sound. This a TV that is very pleasing to watch. The matte screen finish, 1080p, stunning colors, and good dark scene production (for a LED) make this TV and joy to use.

4Good picture, poor sound from speakers, no headphone jack
By Nicholas Wilson
The picture is beautiful for TV or computer VGA or digital connection. It also has an adequate, but plain vanilla media player that can give you a slide show of photos or play MP3 files from a USB plug in. However the slide show does not include any transitions such as fade, nor any pan and scan effect. When you use the remote to pause or back up the slide show, the picture shrinks to show an interface panel at the bottom, and only returns to full screen after a 5-sec delay, so that's another annoyance. The media player can't play any digital video files. It can't zoom in or blow up a photo. Like I said, it's plain vanilla.Other reviewers said the speakers suck, but I didn't realize that it has no headphone jack, which is a major inconvenience for me, since I like to use wireless headphones a lot. It also has only one RCA audio out pair, and they are not volume controlled, another major pain. That means you can't use an inexpensive, simple audio amp and speakers because you have no remote control of the volume or muting. Instead you have to use an amp or home theater audio system that includes its own remote control, and you have to use that instead of the TV's remote to control the volume and muting. Really, how much cost did Toshiba save by not including a headphone jack? And why couldn't they at least optionally make the audio out jacks volume controlled by the remote? My inexpensive (under $60) 2-year old Memorex DVD progressive scan player with HDMI out and upscaling to 1080p makes standard DVD's look great on the Toshiba HDTV screen. But apparently it's not possible to control this DVD player through the HDMI connection using the TV remote. So now I'm up to a minimum of three remotes to watch a DVD and have decent sound. I have a Dishnetwork DVR receiver, so there's another remote. Some brands and models of DVD players and sound systems CAN be controlled by the TV remote through the HDMI connection, but not any of mine.I tried connecting the TV to the HDMI output from my Canon EOS 7D Pro DSLR camera, and it makes a beautiful display. With a long enough HDMI adapter cable I can hold the camera in my lap to work the controls, including ability to zoom in. Again it would be nice if the TV remote could control the camera functions through the HDMI cable, but apparently it can't. The camera is brand new, and I'm not sure if it allows control through the HDMI, but some of Canon's consumer cameras definitely do.I'm very happy with the picture quality, but I probably would have bought something else if I had known there was no earphone jack or controlled audio out on this model. That's why I deducted one star from my rating.Even though this is a full 40" screen it is light and thin enough for me to easily move from one room to another without help, or even to put it in the back seat of my car for transport. That's important because I want to be able to use this to display my photos and photo DVDs in a gallery setting or for small group slideshows. For that purpose I would connect it to my laptop as a computer display rather than use the limited built-in USB player.

5Excellent HDTV for the price!
By T. Chambers
At this price range, this is an excellent 40inch LED 1080p HDTV. Picture is better than most TVs that cost 200 more than this. The sound isn't as bad as some of the reviewers claim. I don't have any problem with the sound and found that it can fill up my whole living room. People need to be realistic; you're NEVER going to get HUGE, house shaking sound from a flat screen TV speaker. If you want sound like that, you gotta buy separate speakers / home theater system. GET Real people. TV looks great, nice shinny finish, stand very stable, and nice and thin. Great TV!!

4Very good TV for the price
By A. Ellis
personally I would not pay extra for 1080p on any TV below 42 inches because there isn't a difference as far as i'm concerned, so I went for this TV, and I am very happy I did. It has a good picture quality, and although the sound isn't great I don't care because I use external speakers when it matters. My only complaint is that the menus are very very slow, especially changing inputs. however, this is just a minor annoyance.

540" XBR6 great set and size
By Gary B
I wanted the biggest set I could buy and fit into the built-in opening in our home (my wife's only requirement). I knew I would be paying extra for a Sony, but decided to make the plunge, since other 40" screens were several inches wider. This set is slim and atractive.I have only had this set for a weeks and am still learning about it's many functions. My set is attached to cable, a blu-ray player for DVDs, and an older Denon A/V amp via S-Video for sound output. Before buying, I researched features availble in a 40" LCD set in the store and on-line. This set led the pack in many ways. The picture is incredable. Plus, if you are into adjustments, you have a great deal of control over the picture settings. I have viewed in a highly lit room as well as in the dark. It's high contrast ratio makes it easy to watch in both situations. I can not detect the blurring, many LDCs suffer from in action sceans. It packs all the latest video inhancements but most importantly, 120Hz, 24p. The built in speaker is even good, and makes a reasonable attempt at surround sound considerng it's is a single source speaker. Of course when hooked up to a A/V reciever, it makes movies come alive. I have not connected to a LAN yet, but am curious to try, soon.It is loaded with input options (HDMI, LAN, USB, Composit, S-Video, etc). The only thing I would like to see is a more versitile USB port, so I could plug in a wireless reciever. This system has to be hard wired to a LAN. It would be nice if the computer input ports were on the side of the set, so it did not have to be pulled out to make these attachemnts. The stand could be improved, it does not allow for any adjustment. It was not a big deal for me, since the set sits at eye level, but if it was sitting anywhere else, you would need to purchase an adjustable mount, which are axpensive for a set this size. The manual is somewhat limited. There are many set-up options that are not full explained. I called Sony for a setup question. They answered fairly quickly. The first rep had me try several different things, but was not much help. Then he passed me on to the "blu-ray" expert, who answered my question in seconds.Overall, this is a great set, I deffinately recommend it.

4Almost Perfect : > /
By CJ
When the price of this Sony dropped to $1429, I jumped on it, when it launched it was $2299, not that long ago either.I got my XRB-6 two days ago, the picture quality is amazing! I have never seen colors so vibrant and clear.I must say though, like I read about clouding issues with other Sony sets, well to my disappointment, it's true, when the screen goes black, there are visible clouds, it's not really a big deal, but since I've been reading about this problem for some time, I would have expected Sony to correct it. Not sure if I'm going to keep this set or not, other than that it's close to perfection, just not sure I can live with this defect or not.My previous set was a cheap Polaroid 37" 1080i, it had no clouding issues though, this problem seems to be exclusive to Sony.Gonna try to adjust the settings, this set has many controls to adjust settings, and there is a control where you can reduce the backlight, which is what is causing this problem.Right now though, I have very mixed feelings, I never had a problem with a Sony before, so I expect perfection. Will update after I make the adjustments to see if it helps any.Update: I made adjustments to the backlight control, if you lower the setting 3 levels, and turn the tv to power save mode, the clouding issues are mostly gone, but your overall picture is much darker, a trade off for getting rid of the clouds. My clouding issues were not too bad, other owners reported clouding covering 50% or more of their screen, my clouding was minimal, sets with this problem seem to have different levels of clouding.Bottom line, I've decided to keep the tv, the pros far outweigh this minor issue.I can't help but wonder if the XBR-8 priced at 5 grand has this problem too.

4Great Product, Terrible Shipping Experience
By Thomas A. Seitz
The XBR is more or less the "Mercedes" of the TV industry, while everyone else compares their product to the Sony, it remains the pinnacle of the LCD game. I looked at both the Samsung and the Sony, both were spectacular. In fact, Samsung makes the screen for the Sony, so it makes sense they are the same. Bottom line, there is simply more "coolness" to the Sony name. The TV is great, but Amazon's white glove shipping stinks. I bought the product, and it sat on several docks for days, finally got through to the shipper, scheduled for Saturday. But guess what? no TV. Have to schedule multiple times - I guess free shipping implies "worthless". The drivers are late, never call back, and all you get is an answering service. I would have bought this product somewhere else if I had known....

5A Great Living Room TV
By Houston Guy
I purchased this TV for our living room and am I glad I did. The picture is crisp and clear with vivid colors and detail. You need to attach the stand to the TV and it is a very simple process. It took me 20 minutes to open the box and attach the stand and have the TV working. A very simple process. If you are looking for a great quality TV at a very good price this is the TV for you.

5Great Tv
By Allison
I could not ask for a better TV for the price. I was a bit unsure about purchasing it because I had never heard of the brand. I would defiantly buy another one without hesitating. Great picture and quality.
