5For the price, GREAT HDTV
By niwert
I got this TV for myself in December 2009. It has been about six months now, so I thought a review might help someone else who is looking at this or similar TVs. I got it from my local Costco and paid $540.00, which was and still is pretty good for a 42" HDTV.The picture quality is absolutely awesome. I have an older, 2002, 1080i Toshiba 65" projection in the house which has provided some excellent viewing over the years. I was somewhat reluctant to buy a 720p because I was concerned about detecting the difference in 1080 and 720. Let me just say that it is now almost painful to try to watch the 65" TV as compared to the Panasonic upstairs. I have a Blue-ray player hooked up to each and the difference in picture quality is noticeable, which I attribute to the differences in technology (projection v. plasma).I was also concerned with glare on the plasma since the room it is in has two windows. The TV is in the corner with a window about 3 feet to the left of the TV and another window on the opposite wall pointing right at the TV. We don't watch a lot of TV during the day, but when I have watched something I have been really surprised that I cannot really catch a glare from either window at all. This model doesn't have a lot of extra's to it. Only two HDMI ports, it has VIERA and not VIERA CAST so there is no internet connectivity, the SD card slot reads VERY slowly (which suggested that trying to connect to some of the various internet capabilities that other models and brands offer would probably be equally as slow). If you have a Blue-ray hooked up to it that has some internet connectivity options or a computer that can actually surf the net, which I have both, then all you really need is the TV to look at.Only bad thing is the remote has taken some getting used to, but that is mostly because I am still used to the previous TVs remote I think.Hope this helps.

5So far so good with this set
By PhillyTurboSix
I just got this set FREE with the purchase of some furniture at Ashley's furniture in Philadelphia. Easy to set up. Easy to use. Other then it being heavy because it's a plasma I'm happy with it all around. I have Comcast HD cable. The audio is pretty good as well. I just picked up a JVC set that I'm not crazy over the stock sound system but this set sounds good enough all by it's self.

5Great TV and Great Price
By Habs11
I got this spring 2010 for about $425. The HD picture is great. I have Time Warner cable on other TV's and for this TV I just have a COAX cable running directly into the TV (no cable box). Most of the channels look good. If you view from close - say 5 feet - the standard def channels are not great... but this is mounted to wall and I watch from bed (about 12 feet) so it serves me just fine. Somehow the signal passed to the TV does allow some HD stations. For example NBC is channel 10 and is standard definition... when i hit the channel up button the set goes to channel 10.1 10.1 is the HD version of NBC. The HD picture is fantastic. I would purchase again and I do recommend to others.

We bought this TV from tigerdirect here on Amazon after some research.Great picture and we were happy with it until the unit crapped out on us after owning it for 6weeks.The lcd panel went bad according to Toshiba tech rep in India (good luck if you have to call them!!). Called Tiger Direct and they would do nothing for us.They WOULD sell us another TV and give us free shipping!!! You can guess what i told them to do!! Next I tried toshiba customer service and they wont replace the TV unless it is deemed"unrepairable". I actually got to talk to somebody in the states and they were no help.Next, I tried to get the thing repaired by the local Toshiba service rep and it seems that the part is currently unavailable and he wont know how long it will take to get or even if he can get it. So I will never buy a Toshiba product again and Tiger direct will never see me again. These ----- companies will take your $$$ in a NY minute but there customer service is Non existant!!! Do yourself a favor and spend a couple extra bucks and buy from your nearest Mom and POP store!!! At least you can keep the $$$ in your community and have a face to talk to when things go wrong!!! signed,MadasHell

4Very Happy
By spyac3
Saw this tv in an ad for 749.99 1-01-12 did some research and decided to purchase, I have found you will drive yourself crazy with professional reviewers since most everything is based on intricate measuring instruments now if they flat out say its junk I believe them. anyways after setting up the set I started to wonder if I made the right chose, since instructions are weak... but I started troubleshooting what I thought was a poor picture and found that everything that contributed to it was not the settings in the tv rather all of the settings in the dish/cable box once I set my receiver box to the correct settings and installed a new hdmi cable the picture on this set is MIND BLOWING... makes it seem as if your in the studio watching them film the episode or news events... I watched Avatar on dvd and was stunned with the picture I then watched the movie 2012 on a HD dish station and it seemed as if the plane was coming out of the screen at you!! Sound is decent but I am using a home theater anyways. I would strongly recommend this product, and if anyone that does purchase has image problems check all of you box/receiver settings before you give it up... I am extremely happy with this unit

5Excellent LCD
By David McLeod
Summary:I am extremely pleased with this LCD. The picture is bright and clear and the colors are excellent. I am completely satisfied with the purchase and recommend this device to anyone.Expanded Review:First, I defined my goals: From about 8 feet away I want to watch High Definition DVD's at 1080p, watch High Definition television including local channels, connect some gaming consoles, connect a PC, and connect my surround sound receiver.I looked at different products for a year. I would compare the appearance between the different sets in the store, read online reviews, talked to friends, and read product specifications.I decided on the following and intended to act before the end of summer: I would obtain a decent 42" LCD with all of the necessary connectors for under $1600, I would purchase a PS3 for Blu-ray as well as HD gaming with the bonus that it will upconvert my current DVD's, and upgrade my current cable service to HD for HD television viewing. I figured to spend about $2000-$2200.When the PS3 price dropped to $500 it figured it was time to move. The contenders after my research included the Samsung, Sony, LG, and the Westinghouse LVM-42W2. Most were over the limit to what I was comfortable spending so it came down to the LVM-42w2. When I went to find it I discovered the TX-42F430S that had been recently introduced. Additionally it was available at a local yellow tagged electronics superstore for the best price advertised. I was able to view this unit side by side with the other available LCD's and it looked just as good, to me, as much more expensive models. I realized however that the signal being pumped into those devices on the wall was not a 1080p signal and that the picture at home might look different. At that point I figured it was bright, the colors were coming through, the menu system was functional, and it was the lowest priced 42" 1080p LCD available ($1299). I bought it with a matching of the online deal that threw in a Sony HT-DDW790 home theater system and a 60 day in house price match. The following Sunday 7/29 it went on sale for $1099. I got the price match ($200 back) and sold the HT system for $120. So, total for this system with PS3 was right about $1500 plus cables, controllers, Blu-ray Planet Earth, and a couple of games for the PS3. I feel good.Results:1. I have the PS3 connected to one of the four(!) HDMI connectors and it looks awesome. Motorstorm at 720p is excellent and Planet Earth at 1080p is unbelievable. I had to get the blue tooth remote for playing movies, you can do it with the controller but it's a pain. Most of the upconverted DVD's look incredible, much better than on standard def TV, this was much better than I expected and for someone not hypersensitive it would be hard to differentiate it from some native HD or Blu-ray DVD's.2. HD Digital Cable content through the component connection looks very good. Standard Definition looks like garbage, but this is expected of all HD LCD's, the pixels on the LCD display the picture in all it's ugly glory. In all my research, I have not come across a way to watch standard def TV and it not look bad. It's functional, and viewable if you don't expand the screen and let it display in 4:3, but a step down when viewing most of the normal TV content. One can only hope that more and more channels come to HD format.3. I have my PC, Wii, and PS2 (only for guitar hero) hooked up though the home theater receiver via S-video at the moment and it serves. I want to move the PC to the VGA connector (I need a new dual head video card), the Wii to the component connection, and the PS2 directly to the S-video in the future.4. I have a digital optical cable running from the output on the LCD to the HT receiver and it sounds good. The interal LCD speakers can be turned off so that only the HT system is used. So, I am very happy. I hope this helps some of you still looking. I relied heavily on comments about the products here and I wanted to return the favor.

4Not Perfect But An Excellent Budget Set
By JazzMann
The picture on this set is quite outstanding, sharp, snappy and capable of incredible detail. The on-screen menu is excellent as well. Connectivity is excellent. it has four HDMI connections!!!, 2 component video connections (YPbPr), a VGA connection, audio SPIDF out, S-Video, numerous analog audio ins/outs etc. The sound system is quite good with a built-in subwoofer. The set has (had) a few flaws:1. You will see some pixel-ating in very dark areas. The picture snaps back when the scene brightens up again. This improves somewhat as the set 'breaks-in'. After about 20 hours of use and adjusting the settings, now, it's a very minor issue for me. ALL LCDs are prone to this to some degree or another.2. I first heard soft popping noises when listening to DVDs (only) with an HDMI connection. The noise would come and go intermittently. This issue went away completely after about 20 hours of use. (I can't explain it). Also, this can be worked around if you use a Home Theater Receiver. You will find that ALL LCDs are going to have some bugs. The TX-42F430S gives you a superb picture at a low price. I recommend it.

4Great price for a great product
By D. Berube
We were looking for a lot of function for a little price. This true 1080p TV has multiple inputs for audiophiles and has a true 1080p pc connection. The set will automatically read the source and adjust itself appropriately... no having to "switch" from DVD, PC or cable... the TV does it for you!!!Since we've only had it a month, the verdict is still out on the longevity factor, but the initial WOW factor of the picture quality and functionality has set this TV as a great alternative to the high priced famous brands. We paid about 1/2 the cost of the same 42" TV in the high end brands and feel we received a top notch product. We had the opportunity to see this TV in use against all the other brands (at the yellow price tag store) we were looking at and we absolutely loved the picture, the features and the look of the TV. Westinghouse went with a matt black finish which is different from everyone else, it looks stylish hanging on the wall and is very easy to keep clean. We are so impressed that we are considering the 47" to replace our perfectly good 32" livingroom TV.Again, other than the question of how long will it last (which is why we are giving this only 4 stars and not 5 - I bought a coverage plan to protect myself and the price was still way below that of the high end famous brand name tvs) if it lasts 5 years it was worth it!!!

2Other things to consider before buying!
By mikkblai
This isn't a horrible TV by any means, picture is decent, and everything works as it should. However... for an $580 TV I have found quite a few things I am very unhappy with, that I didn't really consider before buying.-the TruSound feature had to be turned off within the first two hours... horrible volume fluctuation at the wrong times...-from the time you push the power button expect about 15 seconds before you see a picture (seriously I counted)-once the picture is up...expect another 2-3 seconds for any sound-the same is true for changing channels, NO QUICK SCANNING, its takes about 7 second start to finish one channel to the next, after you enter the channel about 5 second before it turns, then another second or 2 before there is a picture, and yet another couple seconds before there is any sound. **THIS SEEMS LIKE AN ETERNITY WHEN YOU ARE SWITCHING BETWEEN CHANNELS OR SURFING.-my other complaint is the volume control... there needs to be at least three more volume numbers between one and 5. One is able to be heard easily from the next room. TWO is already almost too loud if your the only activity in the house. 3,4, and 5 show very little fluctuation in sound, which I wish was the case for 0-3!

5Great TV - Great Price
By H. Berman
I am not a videophile and have pretty basic viewing criteria.I did a fair amount of research but realized that most of what people were discussing on the forums would be meaningless to me when I got the television home. I looked at televisions in person -- again, to my "untutored" eyes they all looked pretty much the same to me except for one house brand at Best Buys which truly did have an inferior picture even to my non-discerning eyes.I haven't noticed any sound discrepancy but then I can't remember the last time I actually watched a commercial since I watch everything through TIVO and fast forward through all the crap.I also don't notice much of a time lag between changing channels and I think any delay is probably relating to a cable box since this changes at the exact speed as my prior set.It does take about 10 seconds to warm up but that's hardly a huge issue in my life and I don't know whether other LCD sets have the same start up rates. The set was quite a bit cheaper than an equivalent set bought elsewhere - free scheduled delivery - the guy did attach the stand and turn it on but it was up to me to set up the rest which was fine. Delivery from Best Buy was quoted at $75.Vizio seems to be relatively reliable and reliability is somewhat of a crapshoot anyway since my highly rated SONY only lasted 5 years. Given the price differential between this set and its competitors, I'm sure I will be fine with my amortized usage. It's 60 mz - After researching I determined that my viewing habits had no need for 120 since I don't watch sports. Sound is no better or worse than any television and I might see if I can hook it up to my unused BOSE CD player.

5Great TV
By Chris
I have to say, I am very pleased with my purchase. I do however agree with the previous poster. The sound fluctuation can be a bit annoying between commercials, inputs, and channels. My last TV did this, so it doesn't bother me too much. Also, there is no sound delay (picture and audio not matching) this was a big concern for me, I have a friend with a 52" Sony Bravia and another with a 47" LG that both are slightly off. For a 42" 1080p less than $600 I couldn't pass this up.I would recommend if you don't mind changing the volume from time to time.

4Excellent value for the money!
By R. Ocampo
Plasma technology is still the best in terms of brightness, contrast and physical dimensions. You can hang it on a wall and cramp it in tighter spaces. The other option would be an LCD screen, but the picture quality (artifacts) and price factor would make it an odd decision to go for when you could shell out a little more for a Plasma display. Also beware there are two types of LCD screens - LCD and LCD projection. LCD is the same as the computer monitors. Although it has greatly improved since it's introduction, it's still slow and expensive. LCD projection I would shy away from at the moment because it doesn't compare to DLP. Although Sony came out with a so-called "3LCD" technology to rival the high-end DLP 3-chip systems. Know that DLP was first for the 3-chip technology (for their high-end applications like major movie houses), it's not who's first as time will tell how each fare.Yet a good rival that has been hitting the market is LCoS (Liquid Crystal on Silicon). JVC has renamed this HD-ILA and Sony came out with their own name branding - but they are all LCoS technology. Prices have yet to come down and is said to have none of the "cons" of LCD and DLP projection TV by exhibiting good blacks, great speed in drawing the picture and no rainbow effect. Until prices drop to competitive levels with the rest of the other products, this won't be on my list until next year. The next best option behind Plasma, IMO, is DLP by Texas Instruments. It gives the best blacks and color rendition among it's class of projection televisions. How good is DLP? It was the first and no-brainer choice for commercial theaters that project digital movies (i.e. the first digital screening of Star Wars prequels). These are front-projection units that need a reasonably dark room to refrain from washing out the colors it projects to the screen. For personal viewing in bedrooms and living rooms, you need a rear-projection DLP. This encases the whole unit like a regular projection television, and is more kind to ambient light.A. The downside to DLP rear-projection monitors is:The amount of moving parts it entails to create the picture -1. A digital micromirror device (DMD) to reflect light in 1,024 different shades of gray. Because these tiny mirrors each move independently, there is a risk of failure.2. A color wheel that spins in thousands of revolutions per minute to help create the color. The wheel bearing will eventually wear out and will need to be replaced by a technician over time. Furthermore, the noise created as it spins to speed is evident when you power up the monitor. Although any minimal audio volume will drown this sound out.3. The lamp (light bulb) that projects the image onto the screen, just like any other light bulb, has a usable life. Each manufacturer states how long their bulbs will last before it needs to be replaced. A typical life span for 4 hours of viewing each day will last around 4 years. The good news: it only takes to replace the bulb in order to bring the picture quality back to like new just as when you bought the TV. This is versus Plasma and LCD which lose their brightness over time (LCD rear projection also takes replacing the bulb).4. The amount of heat created by the lamp is enormous that you can't box the unit in a cabinet nor stick it's back side too near to the wall unless you want to increase wear on the monitor or create a melt-down.B. The upside is the picture quality you get. In fact the price you would have paid to get this kind of quality and usability over time is unfathomable you would be glad you didn't have to pay for Plasma (of course if you can afford a Plasma or need to hang it on a wall, then this is your only option). Just replace the bulb and you're good to go for another 4 years or so. You can't do that with a Plasma and re-charge the gasses. Unlike Plasma, it's brightness virtually stays constant throughout the usable life of the lamp. Samsung will warn the user when it is nearing the end.C. Physical dimensions enable you to lift the monitor alone. Try doing that to a CRT. Samsung's "floating screen" design enables the picture to give a good impression that the picture is on it's own space. However, the silver accent below the screen (although very elegant) does not fully take the effect into what they are marketing it to be as any light falling on the silver accent reveals the screen is not floating. With all being said, four stars for this monitor because Samsung gives us a lame manual that leaves the technical savvy people out of the loop and questioning for more information - despite the TV having one of the best picture quality and Samsung technology loaded into the monitor (enhanced picture processing and the abillity to fine tune the colors based on ambient light surrounding).Four stars because despite all the technology loaded, they give us one HDMI in socket that doubles as the old DVI socket care of your own ability to buy an HDMI to DVI cable. No FireWire audio input/output unlike other manufacturers. And only one digital audio output courtesty of an optical Toslink connection. The good part is Samsung's strict policy for defective mirror devices, strict manufacturing tolerance and elegant design which helps you trust buying their products more than other manufacturers.A word of caution to shoppers and owners of DLP and other technology that enable true high definition output: the reason for most bad reviews is their disappointment when watching with various low quality sources. They are mislead into thinking their picture quality will improve with these kinds of monitors. On the contrary a monitor of this caliber will show even more imperfections and reveal the low quality output that is being fed into it - garbage in, garbage out. Subscribing to digital cable/satellite isn't enough. You have to subscribe to HDTV and be viewing HDTV sources in order to see it's full potential. MTV isn't HDTV. Know which channels air in high definition. Discovery Channel HD (not simply Discovery Channel) is the perfect viewing sample. You want to maximize the input of sources by using HDMI/DVI cables. Don't use RCA or S-video jacks for this monitor. The least video cable you should use is component cable. Even that I wouldn't recommend because that would mean transmitting analog video signal from source (cable box, DVD player) to TV. Keep the signal pure and clean as possible by keeping it digital until the last minute.Lastly, this monitor's standard output is 720p (progressive) output. Other lower or higher sources fed into the unit will make it convert to 720p. This is helpful info into putting less strain or digital conversion and artifacting to the monitor - feed it 720p signal already so all the monitor has to do is output directly rather than do further processing. If you want the latest technology, this "old" technology isn't for you as there are already a handful of 1080p monitors in the market including monitors made by Samsung. If you're on a budget and want a bang for your buck, you won't make a mistake with this purchase and handing it down the line when you're ready to make a step up into the future (for the same price you purchased this unit).

4Samsung 42" DLP TV
By Dandy Don
The performance of the Samaung 42" lived up to my expectations. I comparison shopped SONY, SHARP, HITACHI and DELL before selecting the SAMSUNG. The luminosity (aided by the picture mode settings) is adequate for viewing in a well lit room. The picture quality is exceptional for HD channels and DVDs in the 480p mode(as good as any of the LCD TVs). Performance on normal analog channels is fair to good compared to direct view TV performance on the same channels (both HD and analog are off cable). Digital audio sound is excellent. The setup and custom adjustment menus are easy to use but sometimes annoying as the menus have 4 to 5 layers. The TV fits in a very small space for its screen size (width and depth are the smallest available for this size). The manual is good but assumes you understand HD terminology and doesn't explain the difference in performance when choosing many of the settings. I highly recommend this TV based on its price to performance delivery.

5Great TV
By James E. Holthaus
I had a problem. I had a bright room that I wanted a TV in and I wanted a larger TV. I thought that rear projection would not be bright enough for the room, but this I can view this samsung TV better then the tude TV I had in the space before. Also, this TV is so light. I replaced a 32 inch tube that was 170lbs with this TV that weighs less then 70.I do have to admit that I have seen the rainbow effect on this TV once in the month that I owned it, but to see if you have to jerk your head and blink at just the right time. Otherwise the picture on this set is stunning with the blackest blacks I've ever seen on a TV and true to life color.

4Panasonic 54" Plasma TV model TC-54PS14
By F. Castelli
Good value for the $$$. Picture quality V.G. and no issue with screen glare. Sound quality seemed "distorted & fuzzy" at times even after multiple adjustments. Called for service and they said it was speaker vibration and install pads to lessen the vibration.Didn't really seemed to make a differencce. Hooked it up to my home theater and still sounded "fuzzy"And 'YES" it does have a audio output...it's optical and your amp needs to have a optical input to work.So I'll call for service again as I believe it's the sound board in the tv because when I use the tv optical output the sound issues is unchanged. This can be verified by playing a dvd and using the dvd players output to input to the home theater..I'm sure the sound will be clear.

4Nice cheep 32" LCD
By D. Duerr
I also purchased this TV from Costco on sale for $320.I'm using this TV in my computer room. It's not my primary TV. Setup was a snap... Hooked up cable, a DVD player, a PS3, and connected my desktop PC DVI->HDMI. HiDef streaming from Netflix on the tv is great. Also the set has a QAM tuner so you can get digital cable without renting the box from the cable company.I read a few complaints about buzzing from the speakers and was prepared for the worst. Most of the time I run sound from the TV through an optical cable to my Logitech Z-5500 surround sound pc speakers. However I used the built in speakers for the first week I had the set and never once heard the buzz. The speakers sound perfectly fine to me.The first thing I did when I hooked the TV up to my PC was run Dead Pixel Buddy. My set has no dead/stuck pixels.Shop around for cables. I wanted one quick so went to Worst Buy. The one HDMI cable I needed was $69. I went online to monoprice and was able to get the same quality cable plus a 15' HDMI, and 20' DVI->HDMI and 15' optical shipped for less than 1/2 of Worst Buys price.

5Best, Cheapest 32 incher I could find...
By Beau Chevassus
I bought my Proscan 32 inch LCD TV off of Costco for $320.00It was the best deal I could find. I'm new at owning a TV, so this is a good starter. I've hooked up my PS3, Wii, and receiver to this TV, and it looks beautiful (I have not used the built-in speakers because I'm running all the sound through my home-theater system. This is the only complaint I've heard from other customers on Costo's website (buzzing in the internal speakers), but I cannot confirm this.). For me, the only downside is there is one burned out pixel. This is pretty much a given these days though, that at least one pixel will be burned out in an LCD screen. (I'm not too picky, especially for $320!).)Great manufacturer ("Proscan")--I've never heard of them before. I think they're trying to get the word out about their product so they can get a foot in the market. (like Vizio did when they first started... first they were the cheapest, now they're well-known so they can afford to be as expensive as the top-brands).Quick note: If you're going to buy any HDMI cables, DO NOT go to Bestbuy, Target, etc (and get suckered into forking over +$50). Buy them on Amazon.com for under $2.00 They work perfectly fine. I've bought all my electronics off of Amazon.Hope this helps shed some light on Proscan! I have never heard of them before this deal, so there's my two cents.

4Great Value, some minor irritations
By Jimbo42
This TV was unpacked and operating in about 15 minutes. Easy setup, so far I've only tested direct to cable with QAM tuner. The connections are inconveniently located on the back, in a recess, and pointing down so you can't see them. There are no side inputs. The video setup is easy, I found the user mode to be the best. Good picture, color and contrast. There are no problems with the sound, Quality is normal for a set of this price, basic stereo with no surround. The remote works ok, but the buttons are small and require multiple pushes sometimes. I can't find much info about Proscan but [...] gave a two year warranty. Overall a good value for $[...] plus $[...] S/H.
